I took part in a year long internship at Family Orthodontics in Gainesville as part of my Honors Mentorship class. I’ve always wanted to be an Orthodontist, but i’ve always struggled with the need to make a difference in the world or at least people’s lives. Everyone sees an Orthodontist in their lives but i’ve always figured no one really cared. Orthodontists don’t save lives or teach you any valuable lessons so what do they do? As a part of my final project for class I researched this question and found some surprising things orthodontists do that most people either don’t know about or don't pay much attention to. Forensic Odontologists are highly experienced, specially trained dentists/ orthodontists. In cases where the forensic odontologist has to establish a person's identity, an orthodontist can be of great help at times. Teeth, with their anatomic/physiologic variations and therapy such as orthodontic treatment, restorations and prosthesis may record information that remains throughout life and beyond. The teeth may also be used as weapons for defense or offense and as such may leave information about the identity of the biter at the time of crime. Forensic odontology also plays an important role in the recognition of crime and abuse among people of all ages. Orthodontists like all other dental professionals can play a major role by maintaining proper dental records and thus providing important or vital information or clues to the legal authorities in order to help them in their search. Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages gums and can destroy the jawbone. Basically, a trial was conducted among adult patients older than 49 with certain periodontal problems. Orthodontist then collaborated with several other doctors of their specialty and performed different procedures to fix the patient's oral health and function. Those that struggle with mouth breathing, speech difficulty, and inability to comfortably close lips have been greatly helped with orthodontic devices. A straight, beautiful smile can be enough to change anyones mood. Everyone who has ever had braces knows that feeling when they finally get them off and nothing beats that.See an orthodontist when ou want a beautiful smile. You feel a great smile will improve your self-esteem and self-confidence. Early or late loss of baby teeth. Difficulty chewing or biting. Mouth breathing.
