Source #__1__ Bibliography (MLA or APA) REDDY, GIRIDHAR, et al. "Role Of Orthodontics In Forensic Odontology- A Social Responsibility." Journal Of Clinical & Diagnostic Research 10.4 (2016): 1-3. Academic Search Complete. Web. 3 Nov. 2016.
Annotation: Orthodonticslike any other specialty has much to offer law enforcement in the detection and solution of crime or in civil proceedings. Forensic odontology often requires an interdisciplinary approach towards dentistry for the purpose of proper diagnosis of cases. In cases where the forensic odontologist has to establish a person's identity, an orthodontist can be of great help at times. Teeth, with their anatomic/physiologic variations and therapy such as orthodontic treatment, restorations and prosthesis may record information that remains throughout life and beyond. The teeth may also be used as weapons for defense or offense and as such may leave information about the identity of the biter at the time of crime. Forensic odontology also plays an important role in the recognition of crime and abuse among people of all ages. Orthodontists like all other dental professionals can play a major role by maintaining proper dental records and thus providing important or vital information or clues to the legal authorities in order to help them in their search Potential Quotes:
Important quote explaining the role: “Forensic dentistry or forensic odontology deals with proper handling, examination, and evaluation of dental records, which are then presented in the interest of law for Justice.”
Quote comparing it to using DNA: “Although forensic dentistry does not offer an objective method of identification comparable to either the fingerprint or more recently, the use of DNA technology, it is still employed as it is relatively inexpensive, is capable of rapid results, and in some cases, virtually a certain identification tool.”
Quote about oral photographs: “While the extra oral photographs can be used to directly identify the facein recognizable faces, the intraoral photographs are of more value in completely disfigured faces, as there may be certain classical hard tissue findings such as fluorosis, enamel decalcification, enamel cracks [33] and fractures, tooth attrition [34], abrasion, lower canines anatomy, to name a few.” Assessment:
This source is credible because it is a journal of clinical and diagnostic research and has been put together from several different sources. As you read the article, you can clearly tell that it is well written by someone who knows what they're talking about.
Reflection:
I will potentially use this source in explaining why orthodontics helpful to a community. I want to prove that it’s not all about the way a person looks and feels with straight teeth even though that is an important part of the reason for orthodontics. This source explains another way orthodontics can help people and why it is potentially an important part in solving forensic cases and identifying bodies. I want to find all of the ways that orthodontics is important and this is a great example.
Summary: This article fits into my potential research because it provides useful insight on a way that orthodontist are important that not many likely know about. My research is going to be based on the question of why orthodontist are important. This source was very helpful in answering this question. I learned that orthodontics can be used to solve crimes where the victim has been bitten. Knowing this helps me to realise how, if I become an orthodontist, I can have a greater role in the world as well. I can use this source in my potential project to help prove my point and give scholarly quotes. This article talks about how there is a whole other level to orthodontics/dentistry that I never knew. It is called forensic dentistry/ orthodontics. Using the knowledge of dental plans/ ortho plans, these doctors are able to spot treatment that whoever left a bite mark on the victim underwent. By maintaining proper dental records, the orthodontist can also help pinpoint the exact person who attacked. It was very helpful for me to learn this as I never knew what a big role orthodontist could have in helping people, and I have been questioning why orthodontics is important because sometimes I lose track of the purpose.

“From the orthodontic treatment associated with periodontal and prosthetic rehabilitation, interferences in occlusal balance were removed and a stable posterior occlusion was achieved centric relation and centric occlusion were established associated with a lateral disocclusion by group function bilaterally.”
“There have been various reports of successful morphologic and esthetic changes after interdisciplinary treatment in adults patients, especially in patients with loss of teeth and periodontal breakdown cause pathologic migration of teeth.Such patients should be treated with an interdisciplinary approach aimed not only to improve oral function and esthetics but also to prevent such problems later in life. In the case reported, the treatment restored to the patient function, esthetics, and improved periodontal condition.”

This article was published by the American Association of Orthodontists. It is a “.org” website and everything in the article is organised and very clear and concise. You can tell that it is written by someone very experienced in the field as well.
Reflection (not the summary): (How will you potentially use it?)
I will potentially use this in my presentation to my peers. Showing them the chart on the website would be a great example and learning opportunity. I could ask the people in my class if they’ve ever experienced any of these and if an orthodontist has helped.
Summary:
My source was: "Why You Should Get Orthodontic Treatment." American Association of Orthodontists, n.d. Web. It provided information on when and why you should get orthodontic treatment. It also explains the purpose of orthodontists and why they are important. For example it states, ““The goal of orthodontic treatment is a beautiful smile and a good bite—meaning straight teeth that mesh well with the teeth in the opposite jaw and look great.” This is definitely a valid source because it is a nonprofit organization and has the “.org” in their url. The author does not seem bias as they are just providing well known information in plain terms. This will fit into my research because it gives useful information on why one might need to see an orthodontist. It also explains ways orthodontists can improve some people's quality of living. I will be including a chart from this website in my presentation as well.
